IBERÁ SEEDEATER Sporophila iberaensis ENDANGERED MESOPOTAMIAN GRASSLANDS
Long written off as a juvenile plumage of Dark-throated Seedeater Sporophila ruficollis, the identity as a distinct species has finally been confirmed following a long taxonomic wrangle. Apparently confined to the Mesopotamian Grassland region, the bird can be fairly easy to see in Paraguay where it is known to breed. It is named for the Iberá Wetlands in northern Argentina where the core population seems to breed.
