GIANT WOOD-RAIL Aramides ypecaha
The "Big Daddy" of the Wood-Rails and the one that is most often encountered by visitors to Paraguay. It is common in the Chaco, often seen in the open on pools at the sides of the Ruta Trans-Chaco (and sometimes in the road itself!). Like other Wood-Rails it possesses a calamitously loud voice, producing an ear-splitting chorus when going to roost - the call roughly resembling OO-PEE-KA-HA, the Guaraní name that was adopted for its scientific name.
