TETRIGIDAE: PYGMY GRASSHOPPERS
Miniscule in size, rarely reaching 2cm long, these grasshoppers are superficially like tiny Acridid grasshoppers. Forewings are padlike and often absent, but within any given species short and long-winged forms appear which may be mistaken for different species. Characteristically the pronotum is long and tapered, extending backwards to cover in the abdomen in many cases. Tarsal formula 2-2-3. Pygmy Grasshoppers are commonly found near water, and some even have thickened areas on the hind tarsi which enable to swim. Auditory and stridulatory organs are absent, they do not sing. They are worldwide in distribution with about 1400 species described.
