OCHRE-COLLARED PICULET Picumnus temminckii ATLANTIC FOREST
Hopping along a bamboo stem and rapping with a force that belies his tiny stature, the hummingbird-sized Ochre-collared Piculet is the smallest of the humid forest woodpeckers. In winter they are active members of mixed flocks, restlessly moving through the understorey, and betraying their presence with their thin trilling calls, but in summer they pair off to breed and are harder to find. The taxonomic status of this species has been the subject of much debate. In Brazil they apparently hybridise with the White-barred Piculet, but in Paraguay they have separate ranges and habitat requirements that prevent the two from meeting.
