SWAMP LIOPHIS Erythrolamprus frenatus
A strongly-patterned Liophis of wetland areas, that shares the red underside with the Almaden Liophis Erythrolamprus almadensis. Note the smooth scales of the upperside and the odd, "mis-matched" arrangement of the black squares on the ventral side. Its a small snake, reaching a maximum length of around 60cm. They feed mainly on small frogs and fish, being semi-aquatic, hiding amongst floating vegetation and striking at their prey. This is a non-aggressive and completely inoffensive species.
