RED-EYED VIREO Vireo olivaceus
Any North American visitor to Paraguayan forest during the summer will be greeted with the familiar song of this abundant migrant species. However they will notice one important difference, the vireos here have brown, not red eyes! A complex pattern of movements and migrations happen in this species which has led ornithologists to split the species into two cryptic forms - the typical northern Red-eyed Vireo which breeds in North America and winters in northern South America and a southern "Chivi Vireo Vireo chivi" which breeds in northern South America and winters in southern South America. However despite the differences in migration patterns the evidence has been insufficient to confirm the existence of two species.
