WHITE-SPOTTED WOODPECKER Veniliornis spilogaster ATLANTIC FOREST
This is generally the most commonly-encountered small woodpecker in the Atlantic Forest, though with its dull colouration it can be difficult to spot! The name White-spotted is a little misleading, the spots on the upperside appear more like bands in the field, and besides they are yellow not white!! This species is usually found alone or in pairs, the male, like most woodpeckers, identifiable by the presence of red on his hindcrown.
