SURUCUA TROGON Trogon surrucura ATLANTIC FOREST
The Surucua Trogon is the only red-bellied Trogon within its range and habitat, the Blue-crowned Trogon preferring drier areas. Trogons have pendulous, square-ended tails and short, stubby bills with serrated edges adapted for plucking fruit. Wings are short and convex, adapted for sudden changes of direction and altitude within their forest habitat. They nest in holes, sometimes burrowed into arboreal termite mounds! Their habit of sitting still for long periods makes them easy to overlook, but they vocalise regularly, monotone pigeon-like, whistled sequences.
