SOLITARY SANDPIPER Tringa solitaria
Strictly speaking the Solitary Sandpiper is a Nearctic Migrant, breeding in North America and wintering in South America (they get 12 months of summer weather that way!), but every year a few birds hang around to pass the winter here. As the name suggests they do not form the large flocks of many other Tringa sandpipers, but "Solitary" is possibly a bit hyperbolic - loose aggregations occur in certain areas. Though it will undoubtedly be familiar to North American birders it may help European birders to think of this species as a New World version of the Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus. They bob their head and tail when nervous.
