MATO GROSSO PUNARE  Thrichomys pachyurus
A large, stocky spiny rat  with olive grey-pelage and a whitish venter, sometimes showing whitish spots above the eyes. This species is notable for its long whiskers, and its fragile tail, which easily breaks in two when gripped, allowing the animal to escape unharmed. The species is typical of arid areas such as the cerrado.
