BARRED ANTSHRIKE Thamnophilus doliatus
The Barred Antshrike is a distinctive bird with an expressive crest, raised when the bird is anxious, annoyed or curious. Like most Antshrikes they are easy to overlook, but they are heard often. Learn the voice and you may be surprised to find them in the middle of Asunción, occupying any bushy tangle that doesn´t yet have a resident pair!

Gallery 2 - Thamnophilus doliatus nest
A nest of this species was found on 16 November 2012 at Tres Gigantes, Departamento Alto Paraguay in scrubby Pantanal vegetation approximately 20m from the banks of the Rio Negro. The nest was a woven cup of dry grass suspended between thin branches and partially concealed in  undergrowth, at a height of approximately one metre from the ground. The nest was 130mm long x 95mm wide x 85mm deep. The unlined cup was 75mm long x 55mm wide x 47mm deep. The clutch of two white eggs with purplish-brown spots and "scribbles" at the broadest end were being incubated by the female when the nest was found at 7.30am. Both eggs measured 22x16mm. All photos by Paul Smith.
