STRIPED CUCKOO Tapera naevia
To Paraguayans he is the "Crespín", source of a mysterious and often-heard whistle, though few people would recognise the bird who produces it if they saw it. It is a secretive bird with an expressive crest, lurking low in junk scrub habitats and calling tirelessly! Like many cuckoos they are nest parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of other birds, particularly the Synallaxis spinetails.
