SPHINGIDAE - HAWK MOTHS: SUBFAMILY MACROGLOSSIINAE
Hawk-moths or "Sphingids" to people in the trade, are the largest and most instantly-recognisable of the moth families in Paraguay. They are characterised by their robust bodies, "triangular" wings, cryptic upperwing and frequently brightly-coloured underwing pattern. They are night flying, spending the day resting quitely, when they are so docile that they are reluctant to fly even when handled. The body is so thickly covered with scales that the head and abdomen merge with the thorax, giving them an almost cigar-shaped appearance. The narrow forewings with pointed tips and powerful thoracic muscles mean that they are agile fliers, able to fly swiftly but also to execute sudden movements and break suddenly - both useful in evasion of predators. The species in this gallery belong to the subfamily Macroglossiinae. To see species in the subfamily Smerinthinae and Sphinginae click here.
