GREENISH SCHIFFORNIS Schiffornis virescens ATLANTIC FOREST
For a long time nobody really knew what a Schiffornis was! Sure it was a nondescript little forest bird with a loud, whistled call, but what were its closest relatives? Successive classification placed it in a variety of different families, including the Manakins (Pipridae), the Cotingas (Cotingidae) and even the Tyrants (Tyrannidae)! Only recently have DNA studies provided an answer to the conundrum. The Schiffornis is part of a mixed bag of species including the Becards and the Tityras which used to go by the inflated name of "The Schiffornis Assemblage", but are now better known as the Tityridae.
