RED-WINGED TINAMOU Rhynchotus rufescens
The source of a haunting, mournful whistle characteristic of Paraguayan grasslands is this distinctive, large tinamou. Common throughout the country in tall grass areas, this species has fared less well elsewhere. Its large size makes it a favourite with hunters and for a while it was threatened with extinction in Brazil, though numbers have since recovered.
