SOUTHEASTERN FOUR-EYED OPOSSUM Philander frenatus
Smith P 2009 - FAUNA Paraguay Handbook of the Mammals of Paraguay Number 9 Southeastern Foure-eyed Opossum Philander frenatus
Pdf file 734kb

Opossums are the American branch of the marsupial order - they raise their young in a pouch. This is a rarely encountered species in Paraguay due to its nocturnal habits and semi-arboreal nature. They are excellent swimmers. The common name refers to the four white spots above the eyes. The species has been recently split from the more widespread Grey Four-eyed Opossum Philander opossum.
