NOTODONTIDAE - PROMINENTS
Named for the prominent scaly horn protruding from the hind margin of the forewing of many species, this is a complex but fascinating group of moths that raise numerous difficulties for identification. Length of forewing and hindwing pattern are often important in separating between the large number of similar species. Prominents are heavily scaled with a large head and are generally arboreal in behaviour. The forewings and elongated abdomen are narrow, the former generally being cryptically-coloured. Check out the defensive postures of some species, bearing a remarkable resemblance to broken twigs or leaves and only revealing themselves as moths when the time comes to make their escape.
