COATI Nasua nasua
The Coati is a long-nosed relative of the raccoon, and shares its long banded tail and inquisitive nature. Coatis are social animals, usually encountered in small groups walking with tail raised - allowing group members to locate each other when walking in tall grass. They are omnivores, feeding on both plant and animal matter. Although only one species of Coati occurs in Paraguay the coat colour is extremely variable. Animals in the northern Pantanal tend to be reddish in colour, whilst those in eastern Paraguay are yellowish-brown or even blackish!
