EARED PYGMY-TYRANT Myiornis auricularis ATLANTIC FOREST
One of the smallest birds in the world, the miniscule Eared Pygmy-tyrant looks like a tiny ball of yellow and green feathers as it perches head high at forest edge. Despite their size they are adaptable little birds, spending long periods perching motionless (usually in pairs) and occasionally sallying for passing insects. Its well deserved nickname in Paraguay is “Relojita” describing the repetitive call that sounds like the ticking of a clock - usually the first sign that one is in the vicinity.
