SHORT-CRESTED MYIARCHUS Myiarchus ferox
On the list of birds which give birdwatchers most headaches, the Myiarchus flycatchers are second only to the Elaenias! Fortunately the three Paraguayan species have very different vocalisations from each other, a major step towards getting their identity right!.

The Myiarchus are a challenging group of which Short-crested is the dullest member. Note the indistinct wing-bars, the wholly black bill (which immediately eliminates Swainson´s Myiarchus) and the lack of rufous on the tail (compare the underside of the tail with Brown-crested).
