GREY-HOODED FLYCATCHER Mionectes rufiventris ATLANTIC FOREST
Slender and subtly tri-coloured in muted shades of grey, green and orange, the Grey-hooded Flycatcher is a handsome bird. Pity then that he seems so intent on hiding himself away in the darkest corners of the undergrowth of humid forest, sallying for insects from a semi-concealed perch within a few metres of the ground. He is easy to miss, especially when he is sat quietly and erect, but once located he can be remarkably obliging to the observer, tolerating a close approach and allowing you to absorb his beauty. Then he opens his bill to call, and out comes a hideous crow-like racket that you would never associate with something so pretty. But it is this distinctive noise that is the birdwatchers main tool in locating him, justifying its distinctiveness and allowing him to be traced in the depths of the forest.
