MICROPEZIDAE - STILT FLIES
No prizes for guessing where these bizarre flies got their common name! A family of 600 or so species of worldwide distribution but reaching their greatest diversity in the Neotropics. These are slender-bodied, typically black-coloured flies usually with darkened wings - though some species may have the wings reduced, or even absent. Note that the forelegs are much shorter than the other pairs of legs, so that some species may appear to be "four-legged". Some species mimic Ichenumonid wasps. Adults are either predatory or attracted to rotten fruit, whilst larvae are phytophagous or saprophagous.
