RINGED KINGFISHER Megaceryle torquata
Of the five Paraguayan (and indeed South American) kingfishers, the Ringed is the Big Daddy! Three times the size of the smallest species he is capable of taking fairly large fish, beating them hard against a branch in order to stun them and remove their spines. Kingfishers nest in holes in river banks, the insides quickly becoming a stinking cesspit, swarming with flies and littered with dung and pieces of fish, yet remarkably the fledged young leave the nest with pristine plumage!
