GUANACO Lama guanicoe
The South American branch of the camel family is represented by a group of Llama-like animals, only one of which reaches Paraguay - the Guanaco. Origin of the domestic Llama and Alpaca, the Paraguayan population is particularly important because it belong to the extremely endangered lowland subspecies (the highland Guanacos are otherwise fairly common). What is probably the last population of Guanacos in Paraguay is found in the desolate and remote PN Médanos del Chaco, a spectacularly huge reserve in the north-westernmost Paraguayan Chaco.
