CAPYBARA Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris
Wherever you go in the world you will not find a bigger rodent than the Capybara (or Carpincho as he is known locally). Like a giant guinea-pig he is an inhabitant of waterways throughout the country, becoming numerous in areas where he is not persecuted. Capybaras are herbivores, forming herds that graze waterside vegetation. They are excellent swimmers, the eyes, nose and ears all being set high on the square-shaped head enabling him to swim with most of the body submerged but still remain alert to his surroundings.
