SAVANNAH HAWK Heterospizias meridionalis
Though he looks relatively drab and brownish when perched, the handsome Savannah Hawk will really take your breath away when he bursts into flight - his bright orange wings absolutely stunning in the Paraguayan sun. He is an open-country hawk, his long legs an adaptation for a semi-terrestrial existence. In much of the country he is one of the commoner large hawks, his intelligence combined with a more than adequate supply of small vertebrates on which to feed combining to make him one of the most successful Paraguayan raptors.
