COMPARATIVE GALLERY: SUBFAMILY HELICONIINAE - LONGWINGS
A distinctive group of butterflies which, as their name suggests, are characterised by their long wings. Heliconids have a weak, flappy flight style that you might think renders them very vulnerable to predators. However the larvae of Helcionids feed on Passionfruit vines Passeriflora, a toxic plant that renders the adults unpalatable to predators. The strong colouration of the Longwings acts to advertise the fact that they are not good to eat, and as a result they are mimicked by many unrelated species.
