CRESTED HORNERO Furnarius cristatus CHACO
The Chaco Hornero, he bears all the hallmarks of his widespread cousin the Rufous Hornero, except he chooses to ply his trade in the driest, most inhospitable part of the country. He walks in the same way, builds the same clay-oven nests and even his call is similar, but thanks to the pointy crest on his forehead you are never likely to mistake him for his larger relative. This is one of the commonest birds in the High Chaco, where they outnumber the Rufous Hornero, but they seem unable to tolerate even the slightest bit of humidity, and south of Filadelfia they become an increasingly rare sight.
