DOLICHOPODIDAE - LONG-LEGGED FLIES
Contrary to the common name, not all of the 7000 species of this worldwide family have long legs at all. Typically they are small metallic flies with large prominent eyes. Males have enlarged genitalia, frequently an important character for spcies recognition. Adults are predatory. Members of this family have been extensively studied because of their highly-developed courtship behaviour. Fossils are known from the Cretaceous period.
