NINE-BANDED ARMADILLO Dasypus novemcinctus
Smith P 2007 - FAUNA Paraguay Handbook of the Mammals of Paraguay Number 8 Nine-banded Armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus
Pdf file 1.49mb

Dasypus armadillos are comonly known as "long-nosed" armadillos or Narigones in Spanish, for obvious reasons. They are characterised by the long thin snout and big rabbit-like ears. The Nine-banded is the most commonly encountered of the group, generally occurring in forest areas especially where humid. They have declined substantially in eastern Paraguay but remain common in the Humid Chaco and Itaipú Reserves. The yellowish triangles on the 8-10 movable bands of the midriff are diagnostic of this species.
