AZARA´S AGOUTI Dasyprocta azarae
Agoutis are fairly large forest rodents with a vestigial tail - the back-end drops off steeply so they look essentially tail-less. They can be common where they occur, feeding largely on fallen fruits - a diet which makes them a major player in the seed dispersal of many tree species. Agoutis habitually sit on their thighs, manipulating food with the dextrous forefeet - somewhat in the manner of a squirrel.
