CAMPO FLICKER Colaptes campestris
The last place most people would expect to see a woodpecker is in a grassland, but that is where the Campo Flicker makes his home ("Campo" is Spanish for "Field"). He is actually quite a terrestrial bird, hopping on the ground and probing for invertebrates. One of his favourite foods are termites, and the Paraguayan countryside is dotted with termite mounds each showing a woodpecker hole near the top, indicative of the Flicker´s handywork. Flickers are sociable birds and get their name from their excitable greeting displays, involving loud calling and manic flicking of the wings.
