VEERY Catharus fuscescens
Familiar to North American birders, the dumpy Veery is something of an enigma on its South American wintering grounds. It seems that the bulk of the population winters in southeastern Brazil, but their secretive habits and tendency not to call much on their wintering grounds makes them difficult to detect. The first Paraguayan record of this bird was a juvemnile male collected en PN Serranía San Luis, Departamento Concepción in October 1996, but there had been neither sight nor sound of it again until this individual was photographed a remarkable 700km to the west in PN Tte Enciso, representing the second record of the species in Paraguay.
