GREAT BLACK HAWK Buteogallus urubitinga
He´s great, he´s black and he´s a hawk, so his common name about sums him up. A stocky species, he is associated with wetland areas and is most common around temproary pools in the Low Chaco and Pantanal. Here he sits patiently with head bowed, waiting for an unfortunate lizard, frog, snake, rodent or indeed anything else that tickles his fancy to pass by. Then with a sudden flurry of feathers, he takes his unfortunate prey back to his perch to leisurely finish his meal.
