BLACK-CHESTED BUZZARD-EAGLE Buteo melanoleucus
Part buzzard, part eagle, the buzzard-eagle was formerly placed in its own genus Geranoaetus to reflect its supposedly unique characteristics. Genetic studies have since proved that the buzzard-eagle is a lot more buzzard than was originally thought and it is now placed in the genus Buteo. Adults are handsome birds with short tails, most frequently encountered in the Chaco. Oddly juveniles have a completely different flight silhouette being much longer-tailed and creating confusion as to their identity.
