BLACK-COLLARED HAWK Busarellus nigricollis
Of all the hawks that make a living from hanging around drying ponds in the Chaco, the most distinctive and arguably the most handsome is the Black-collared Hawk. He´s a fish-eater, his job becoming progressively easier towards the end of the dry season when fish become stranded as a writhing mass in ever decreasing circles of water. This is the boom time for the Black-collared Hawk, and he is well-advised to make the most of the bounty. Once the rains come again he will have to work much harder for his prize.
