SLATY-BREASTED WOOD-RAIL Aramides saracura ATLANTIC FOREST
Representing the humid forest-dwelling branch of the Wood-Rail group, the Slaty-breasted is the one that is least often seen by birdwatchers. Unlike the other species it has no dependence on water, though it is often more numerous close to forested waterways. They are adaptable omnivores, and birds at Hotel Tirol even use the rubbish tips there to scavenge for food - an undistinguished habit for an otherwise refined bird. Like other Wood-Rails it possesses a calamitously loud voice, producing an ear-splitting chorus when going to roost - the call roughly resembling SA-RA-KOO-RA, the Guaraní name that was adopted for its scientific name.
